Executive Summary

In this compelling case study, Eleven Degrees Consulting, an Advanced AWS Partner, successfully orchestrated the seamless migration of Line Plast Group, a prominent packaging company, from an on premise SAP Business One solution with Microsoft SQL Database to the AWS cloud platform. This transformative migration not only ensured enhanced scalability, agility, and cost-efficiency for Line Plast Group but also underscored the profound expertise and strategic prowess of Eleven Degrees Consulting in orchestrating complex cloud transitions. The result? A future-ready IT landscape for Line Plast Group, poised for sustained growth and innovation in the competitive packaging industry.

Customer Challenge

Line Plast Group encountered formidable challenges with their on-premises SAP Business One system running on SQL databases. As their business expanded, the ever-increasing data volume strained the system’s performance, leading to frustrating slowdowns and inefficiencies in day-to-day operations. Furthermore, the soaring maintenance costs associated with the aging infrastructure became unsustainable for the company. The lack of scalability further compounded their predicament, hindering their ability to adapt to market fluctuations and seize growth opportunities swiftly.

If left unaddressed, these challenges could have dire consequences for the Line Plast Group. Continued performance issues and the inability to handle expanding data loads could jeopardize their competitiveness and customer satisfaction, potentially leading to lost business opportunities and market share. The escalating maintenance costs would further erode profitability, making it increasingly challenging to allocate resources for innovation and strategic initiatives. Ultimately, failure to modernize their IT infrastructure could have threatened the very sustainability and viability of the company in the fiercely competitive packaging industry.

Partner Solution

To tackle the pressing challenges faced by Line Plast Group, Eleven Degrees Consulting, devised a comprehensive and tailored solution. The primary hurdle was the underperforming on-premises SAP Business One system with Microsoft SQL databases, coupled with escalating maintenance costs and limited scalability. Eleven Degrees recognized the urgency of modernizing their IT infrastructure to ensure sustainable growth and competitive edge.

First and foremost, Eleven Degrees Consulting recommended migrating the SQL database to an r5.xlarge Amazon EC2 instance. This instance offered the robust computing power required to handle the growing data volume efficiently. It was complemented by a substantial 300GB Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) storage volume, ensuring ample storage capacity for the database. This strategic shift significantly improved database performance, eliminating the performance bottlenecks that had been plaguing Line Plast Group’s operations.

To further optimize the system’s performance and prevent resource exhaustion on the database instance during high loads on the service layer, Eleven Degrees introduced a separate m5.2xlarge EC2 instance. This instance was dedicated to hosting the SAP Business One application and the Active Directory (AD) Server, providing a clear demarcation of services and ensuring smooth, uninterrupted operation. It was equipped with a 200GB EBS storage volume, offering sufficient space for application data and facilitating efficient management.

In parallel, to fortify data security and ensure robust disaster recovery capabilities, Eleven Degrees implemented a rigorous backup strategy. Regular EBS snapshots were taken and securely stored on Amazon S3 Standard IA (Infrequent Access) storage, safeguarding against data loss. These snapshots were retained for a period of 30 days, allowing Line Plast Group to recover critical data swiftly in case of unforeseen incidents.

By adopting this holistic solution, Eleven Degrees Consulting not only resolved the immediate performance issues but also positioned Line Plast Group for future growth and scalability. The modernized AWS infrastructure delivered superior performance, cost-efficiency, and enhanced data protection. Line Plast Group was now equipped to seize market opportunities, reduce operational costs, and ensure business continuity, cementing their competitive advantage in the packaging industry.

Results and Benefits

The implementation of Eleven Degrees Consulting’s AWS solution delivered significant benefits for Line Plast Group, effectively addressing their initial challenges. First, the migration and optimized EC2 instances led to a remarkable 40% improvement in system performance. The company’s SAP Business One system now operated smoothly even under heavy workloads, eliminating frustrating slowdowns.

Moreover, the cost savings were impressive. The reduction in maintenance costs amounted to an annual savings of $80,000, enabling Line Plast Group to invest in strategic initiatives. Additionally, the AWS infrastructure’s enhanced scalability allowed the company to accommodate a 30% increase in data volume without performance degradation.

Furthermore, the robust backup strategy with EBS snapshots stored on Amazon S3 Standard IA provided reliable disaster recovery. In an unforeseen data loss incident, the 30-day retention period allowed the company to recover critical data swiftly, minimizing downtime and financial losses. This migration not only resolved initial challenges but also positioned Line Plast Group for sustainable growth in the packaging industry.
